Honoring the Past

Once a 19th-century Carriage House on a John Calvin Stevens’ original estate, this brick structure has lived many lives. Following a devastating fire that took the original mansion, the surviving carriage house stood as a quiet relic—partially renovated, heavily altered, and ready for a new chapter.

Restoring character, reimagining function

With a shared appreciation for history and craft, the homeowners—an artist and a furniture maker—approached the renovation with both reverence and vision. The original bay window, an iconic feature, was carefully removed, restored offsite, and returned to its rightful place. A Monson slate roof—salvaged from a Massachusetts church—further echoes the home’s past, anchoring the aesthetic in time.

Underneath the traditional envelope lies a double-walled brick structure and an entirely modern interior, shaped collaboratively by Heidi Gerquest Designs and Simons Architects. The homeowners’ touch is evident throughout—from the handcrafted kitchen cabinetry and entry bench to the custom waterfall stairway and front door.

A home for makers

True to the couple’s creative spirits, the design balances artistry with purpose. The wife’s painting studio and gallery space were central to the layout, creating room to work and exhibit. Outside, copper standing seam cladding wraps the home’s L in a bold yet timeless finish, blending industrial detailing with the remaining residential brick warmth.

Built within bounds

Located on a tight urban lot with just a few feet between structures, the project demanded precision. Setback constraints and persistent drainage challenges meant gutting the interior and taking a highly strategic approach to grading, water management, and layout.

An eye for detail

From the street, the view back to The Carriage House is striking—elegant, solid, and quietly commanding. But it’s the fine details that define this home: the craftsmanship, the clarity of vision, and the deeply personal imprint of its owners. Built to reflect a love of art, material, and Maine’s layered history, this project turns a forgotten structure into a lasting legacy.
